Venturing out into the world of chickens

My husband eats a lot of eggs.  A lot of eggs.  So it wasn’t a shock when he proposed getting some chickens when we moved to the mountains.  After some time we pretty much decided against it, but when we went to a funeral last month and was given a small chicken coop…well, it was a game-changer.

The chicken coop that we were given needed some work to repair and reinforce.  It would accomodate two, maybe three (small) chickens.  We didn’t work on it right away because the weather wasn’t so great and then when the weather did improve, poison ivy and pollen/sinuses/congestion wreaked havoc on me.  I’ve been using that downtime to do some chicken research.  Boy have I learned a lot!

One of the first things I learned is that the coop we had is basically considered by many to be a “starter” coop because most people tend to enjoy them so much that they want to add to their flock.  I’ve also learned that if you’re going to raise chickens, you need to have at least three to establish the pecking order so you don’t have a bunch of fighting or behavior issues with the chicks.  So I decided to build a chicken coop instead of fixing the other one.  (There’s already someone ready to take the other one off our hands.)

There are a lot of chicken coop designs (small to large) that you can look through at Backyard Chickens.com.  That website has a ton of great info!  You can also get a lot of inspiration and ideas from youtube and other websites.  I’ve pretty much decided on the one I want to build, while tweaking it to include some features from some others.  Now I just need to hurry up and get over all this “sicky junk” so I can get started!
